WillMicrosoft or Nvidia Ultimately Reach a Market Capitalization of $5 Trillion, and Who Will Prevail?

Nvidia, the world-renowned manufacturer of graphics processing units (GPUs), has taken the lead in the race to reach a $5 trillion market capitalization, surpassing Microsoft.

In a significant milestone, Nvidia crossed the $4 trillion mark in market cap by July 2025, driven by its central position in the AI hardware market and investor optimism about future growth. This achievement places Nvidia at the helm of the world's largest companies in terms of market cap, while Microsoft follows closely but remains just behind, with a market cap of about $4.18 trillion versus Microsoft's $3.75 trillion as of July 2025.

Nvidia's valuation is propelled by expectations for its AI chip business to be fundamental for next-generation technology, despite being smaller in current revenues compared to Microsoft. The company's GPUs are in high demand for data centers due to their flexibility, making them a crucial component in the AI revolution.

Microsoft, on the other hand, continues to show strong growth, especially in cloud services and AI software. Azure, its cloud computing service, is seeing significant growth and is the top platform for building cloud workloads. However, the company's trajectory is comparatively slower than Nvidia’s recent rapid growth.

In Q1 fiscal year 2025, Nvidia's net income increased by 26%, despite a write-off of H20 chips. Microsoft's net income rose by 24% in Q4 of fiscal 2025. Despite Microsoft's impressive growth, it is still slower than Nvidia's, even with Nvidia's results being hampered by the U.S. revoking its export license to China, which affected the sales of H20 chips.

Nvidia's premium valuation compared to Microsoft is another factor contributing to its lead. The company is expected to grow earnings faster than Microsoft, making it the favoured choice among investors.

Moreover, Nvidia has reapplied for the export license to China, which could potentially boost its sales and net income in the coming quarters. The company expects data center capital expenditures to rise from $400 billion in 2024 to $1 trillion by 2028, providing a significant growth opportunity for Nvidia.

Analysts believe that Nvidia is likely to beat Microsoft to the $5 trillion market cap due to its faster growth and premium valuation. If current trends persist, Nvidia is expected to be the first of the two tech giants to reach this monumental milestone.
