Older Android devices, including the Samsung Galaxy S3, will no longer receive WhatsApp support from 1 January onwards.

WhatsApp support withdrawal for Galaxy S3 and other older Android devices effective January 1st

Starting January 1, 2025, WhatsApp will discontinue support for Android devices running Android KitKat (4.4) and older, and iPhones running iOS older than version 15.1. This decision is part of a broader trend towards implementing more advanced features and AI functionalities, which require modern hardware and software capabilities.

The platform's shift is driven by the need to leverage these modern capabilities to deliver enhanced security, improved performance, and a better user experience. Some of the features driving this change include:

  1. Enhanced security protocols: New encryption techniques and security updates require more recent Android versions with improved cryptographic support.
  2. AI and advanced multimedia capabilities: WhatsApp is integrating AI-powered functionalities such as smarter voice message processing, grammar checking, and possibly features like AI-driven video creation or improved media handling. These demands modern hardware and software frameworks.
  3. Improved performance and user experience: New animations, faster processing, better battery optimization, and synchronization between multiple devices necessitate modern operating system capabilities and hardware support.
  4. Support for evolving APIs and services: Features like cloud backups, richer communication formats, and interoperability enhancements require up-to-date system APIs only available in recent Android versions.

The discontinuation of support affects devices like the Samsung Galaxy S3, Motorola Moto G (1st Gen), HTC One X, and others, which were released around 2013. Users of these older devices may not be able to access the new features that WhatsApp is planning to introduce.

If you're still using an Android device running Android KitKat or older, you'll need to consider upgrading to a newer device to continue using WhatsApp after January 1, 2025. Before the support ends, remember to back up your WhatsApp data on a new device to avoid losing your media and chat history.

Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, has also announced similar support discontinuation for iPhones, with the cutoff set for May 2025. After this date, users of older iPhones will have to resort to SMS starting the new year.

The new features that WhatsApp is planning to introduce have not yet been revealed. However, the decision to drop support for older devices is a clear indication that the messaging app is moving towards a more advanced, AI-driven future.
