In contrast to the relentless work culture of Silicon Valley, Nicholas Turley, a key figure at ChatGPT, embarks on a digital detox every weekend. As he shared with the German Press Agency, this break from technology isn’t standard in Silicon Valley, but it suits him just fine.
Since 2022, Nicholas Turley has been at OpenAI, where he leads product development for ChatGPT, the chatbot that's captured the public's attention with its advanced artificial intelligence. Born and raised in Itzehoe, Schleswig-Holstein, Turley is one of the main speakers at the OMR festival in Hamburg.
In his personal life, Turley finds ChatGPT handy for keeping up with the latest advancements in AI, as well as for organizing his thoughts and managing his hectic work schedule. It also helps him with practical matters, such as finding substitutes for missing ingredients when baking. "When it comes to a time difference between San Francisco and Germany, ChatGPT is more convenient," he explained.
There's one aspect of life, however, where Turley prefers human interaction over artificial intelligence: friendship. "I value my friends and prefer talking to real people. Some individuals might view things differently, but I consider friendship as something personal," he expressed.

Navigating the Digital World with AI
- Professional Productivity: AI tools such as ChatGPT can help professionals automate tasks, find quick solutions, and foster creativity, thereby enhancing productivity.
- Personal Use: On weekends or during personal time, ChatGPT can be used for tasks like writing, planning activities, organizing projects, or even generating ideas for hobbies.
- As he disconnects from the digital world during weekends, Nicholas Turley reflects on the Value of Human Interaction in Personal Relationships, even though he finds AI useful for Professional Productivity.
- In a contrasting move, The Commission could also submit a proposal for a Directive on the Protection of Workers, aiming to mitigate the Risks related to Exposure to Ionizing Radiation, inspired by Turley's digital detox, advocating for a balanced approach to technology in the workplace.
