Volkswagen's ID.1: Compact, Affordable EV Coming in 2027

Volkswagen's upcoming ID.1, a compact electric vehicle, is set to hit dealerships by late 2027. The ID.1 promises a bold yet accessible design, a spacious interior, and an efficient can. It will compete with the Renault Twingo, expected to launch in 2024.

The ID.1 will be powered by a newly developed front-wheel drive system, delivering a peak power of 70 kW or 95 PS. To optimize range, the top speed is designed to be limited to 130 km/h. The vehicle is expected to have a range of at least 250 kilometers on a single charge, thanks to its likely 35 kWh battery. This battery, supplied by VW subsidiary PowerCo, will use LFP chemistry for cost reasons.

VW's chief designer Andreas Mindt has aimed to create a bold yet accessible design for the ID.1, with the 'ID.Every1' concept car serving as a retro-inspired preview. The ID.1 will have a length of 3.88 meters and a width of 1.82 meters, reminiscent of the original Beetle. Despite its compact size, the ID.1 will offer a spacious trunk, with a capacity of 305 liters, surpassing the original Golf's 220 liters.

The ID.1 will use an operating system from US partner Rivian instead of VW's CARIAD, driven by cost considerations. It is expected to be priced comparably to the Renault Twingo, with an initial price under 20,000 euros.

The ID.1, set to arrive in 2027, promises an efficient electric powertrain, a spacious interior, and a retro-inspired design. Its competitive pricing and long range make it an attractive option in the compact electric vehicle segment.
