In a significant move, Absa and Visa have renewed their strategic partnership to accelerate the development of innovative, inclusive, secure, and digitally enabled financial payment ecosystems across Absa’s Regional Operations (ARO). This partnership aims to connect with local markets deeply and provide services that support practical business challenges, increase credit availability, and promote responsible lending.

The renewed partnership places strong emphasis on three main areas:

  1. Digital infrastructure expansion: The collaboration will deepen efforts to improve the payment ecosystem, focusing on enhancing digital payment experiences.
  2. Small and medium-sized business (SME) enablement: The partnership will enable SMEs with targeted solutions to improve access to credit, expand payment acceptance, and support responsible lending. One such solution is the newly introduced Visa Business Credit Cards, which facilitate virtual card issuance and advanced expense management.
  3. Customer-centric innovation: The partnership will focus on co-developing solutions that drive digital commerce, enhance customer experiences, and support inclusive economic growth in the Cards and Payments domain.

Omar Baig, Managing Executive of Absa Regional Operations Retail & Business Banking, stated that partnerships like this help scale impact across the continent, delivering locally relevant solutions. Michael Berner, Head of Southern and East Africa at Visa, echoed this sentiment, expressing that the partnership aims to transform how individuals and businesses engage with financial services and to grow digital access across the region.

Notable achievements under this partnership include Absa becoming the first bank in multiple African markets to launch Visa Direct, enabling card-to-card domestic and international payments. The partnership has also introduced premium card products (Visa Signature and Infinite metal cards) and expanded Absa Pay issuer wallets, marking a first in Mauritius.

The agreement was formalized at a signing ceremony in Johannesburg, marking a significant milestone in a relationship that has driven innovation and financial inclusion across the continent for many years. Lineshree Moodley, Country Head of Visa South Africa, stated that the partnership with Absa stands as a powerful testament to the shared vision between the two brands, driving innovation and financial inclusion at scale.

Saviour Chibiya, Chief Executive of Absa Regional Operations, expressed that through their strategic partnership with Visa, they are building a financial ecosystem that reflects the pace of today’s African economies. This renewed partnership between Absa and Visa is shaping the future of finance in Africa, one innovation, one business, and one customer at a time.
