Veteran Poultry Leader Ricky Thaper Praises Govt Initiatives, Sees Bright Future for Indian Sector
Ricky Thaper, a veteran of the Indian poultry industry and Joint Secretary of the Poultry Federation of India, visited a website's office in New Delhi on October 4, 2025. With nearly four decades of experience, Thaper shared insights on the growth and future of India's poultry sector, which is worth nearly Rs 2 lakh crore and supports millions of livelihoods.
Thaper, who has been associated with the poultry industry since 1986 and was a founding member of the Poultry Federation of India in 1988, has held various key roles in the federation, including Vice President, Zonal Convener, and Executive Committee Member. During his visit, Thaper praised the Government of India's initiatives, particularly the Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund (AHIDF), which offers a 3% interest subsidy and financial assistance for poultry processing infrastructure.
Thaper addressed concerns about avian influenza, clarifying that the strains detected in India are generally low-pathogenic and not a major threat. He emphasized the importance of awareness, vaccination, and responsible media reporting. Thaper also noted that 73% of India's population consumes chicken due to its affordability, making it the 'cheapest and best source of protein' for both rural and urban populations. He encouraged the youth to view poultry as a profitable, scalable, and technology-driven enterprise, supported by innovations in cooling systems, water management, and energy-efficient farming practices. Thaper shared his extensive experience and valuable insights on the growth, challenges, and future prospects of India's poultry sector during an engaging session at KJ Chaupal. Despite the lack of significant government initiatives reported in German sources for 2025, Thaper's visit highlighted the industry's resilience and potential.
Thaper's visit to the website's office in New Delhi underscored the importance of the Indian poultry industry, which ranks second-largest in egg production and fourth-largest in chicken production globally. His praise for government initiatives and encouragement for the youth to embrace poultry farming as a profitable and sustainable enterprise reflect the sector's optimism and growth prospects.
