Utilization of AI by Small Businesses in the Year 2025
Small Businesses Embrace AI for Efficiency, Not Transformation
In the world of small businesses, artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer a distant concept but a tool that's being integrated into daily operations. This shift towards AI adoption is evident among various sectors, from Managed Service Providers (MSPs) to small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
One such business is iRepairBermuda, an electronics repair and retail shop in Hamilton, Bermuda, owned by Alex Jones. Jones, who bought the shop in 2015, uses AI to streamline his internal processes, with one of his creations being a productivity app that tracks tasks and time spent on them.
Similarly, in Flagstaff, Arizona, Fady Ebeid, the owner of Pinnacle Building Services, a commercial cleaning firm with about 70 employees, is leveraging AI to boost efficiency. Ebeid's team uses AI tools like ChatGPT to draft proposals faster, and an AI workflow tool called Zapier to automate the process of piping Google reviews into ChatGPT, which drafts replies and posts them automatically, saving about 20 minutes a day.
Despite these advancements, it's important to note that the AI revolution in small businesses is not about sparking an economic transformation, as suggested by Alex Jones. Rather, it's about punching above their weight and achieving success on a larger scale, as stated by Jordan Crenshaw, a senior vice president at the Chamber, who mentioned earlier in this article that small businesses adopting AI were growing and competing effectively.
A study from the Technology Engagement Center of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce supports this, stating that 98% of small businesses are already using AI. However, the real productivity boost from AI, according to Jones, has been modest. The tools save time, often an hour or less a day, but still require human oversight.
Rand Larsen, who runs Scalepath, a company that builds peer groups for small business owners, echoes this sentiment. Few of his members are building tools for themselves using AI, and the tools that are being used are mostly bundled inside the software they already use.
However, the impact of AI on small businesses is not to be underestimated. It's becoming the go-to move for nearly everyone, siphoning traffic from websites, including their own, as people turn to AI-generated summaries instead of browsing online pages.
In conclusion, the AI revolution is underway among small businesses, but it's not redefining how their businesses run. Instead, it's providing a much-needed boost in efficiency, allowing small firms to compete effectively in the digital age.
