Upgraded AMD Threadripper Pro 9995WX's cooling system through the installation of a BMW M4 radiator and some Toyota Highlander fans, yet the pump's capacity of 1,200 liters per hour falls short compared to the cooling power of liquid nitrogen.
In a fascinating demonstration, Chinese TechTuber Geekerwan has showcased an unconventional cooling solution for AMD's Threadripper Pro 9995WX, a processor capable of demanding up to 1,000W of power during extreme overclocking. The high power consumption of the Threadripper Pro 9995WX, which comes without a bundled cooler, necessitated an alternative cooling solution.
Geekerwan's innovative approach involves the use of a BMW M4 car radiator combined with Toyota Highlander fans. The BMW M4 radiator, designed to cool a high-performance car engine producing over 500 bhp, offers a large cooling surface and robust heat rejection capacity. The radiator, approximately 600x350mm in size, is about the equivalent of five 360mm PC radiators combined, providing ample space for heat dissipation.
To generate adequate airflow over such a large radiator surface, Geekerwan used two large Toyota Highlander fans. These fans, consuming 100W collectively, help maintain a strong airflow necessary for effective cooling.
The key components of this cooling setup also include a powerful automotive-grade water pump from the BMW M4, rated for 1,200 liters per hour, and careful water-block and piping considerations to mitigate flow restrictions and thermal bottlenecks.
Despite this advanced cooling hardware, the CPU water block remains a thermal bottleneck, limiting heat removal efficiency. Flow rates drop significantly after passing through the water block and tubing, and the system is thus not as effective as liquid nitrogen cooling, which is used by some extreme overclockers to reach even higher frequencies.
With this setup, the Threadripper Pro 9995WX can run stably at around 4.9 GHz across all cores while drawing roughly 947-1000W of power, far beyond its default 350W TDP and typical workstation cooling capacities. However, the setup failed to break the 5.0 GHz all-core mark due to the interface between the CPU cores and the AIO system.
It's important to note that consumer CPUs like the Ryzen 9 9950X are still superior to a Threadripper for gaming. The Threadripper Pro 9995WX, priced at $11,699, is AMD's newest flagship in the Threadripper 9000 series, featuring the Zen 5 architecture, a 384MB cache, 96 cores, and 192 threads, capable of running at up to 5.4GHz.
Geekerwan's video demonstrating this cooling experiment can be found on his channel, with closed captions translated to English. For those interested in extreme overclocking, this setup is currently among the best liquid-cooling solutions short of exotic cryogenic methods for managing the extremely high heat output of this flagship processor.
The demonstration by Geekerwan, the Chinese TechTuber, showcases an unconventional liquid cooling solution for the Threadripper Pro 9995WX, a high-power processor, utilizing various gadgets such as a BMW M4 car radiator, Toyota Highlander fans, an automotive-grade water pump, water-blocks, and piping. This technology-driven innovation aims to address the demanding cooling requirements of the Threadripper Pro 9995WX, which can draw up to 1000W of power during extreme overclocking.
