Unveil seven trailblazing Hispanic and Latin innovators, revolutionizing technology landscape
In the rapidly evolving tech world, a group of visionary Hispanic and Latin founders are making their mark, creating apps that cater to diverse needs and cultures.
Susie Jaramillo, CEO and co-founder of Encantos, is using technology to create immersive story experiences for millions of children. Encantos works with diverse creators around the globe to tell culturally authentic stories. Their flagship app, Canticos, is the top bilingual preschool app on the App Store. The idea for Canticos came from the need to have all children's content, music, and singalong videos in one place, in two languages.
Encantos' success story took a significant leap when they were featured on the App Store at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. This boost propelled them from 80,000 downloads to over 1 million. Co-founder Steven Wolfe Pereira also participated in Apple's inaugural Entrepreneur Camp for Hispanic and Latin founders, providing Encantos with access to Apple engineers, UX designers, product managers, marketers, and execs.
Another innovative app, BiteSight, aims to give visually impaired people the power to see through their phone and identify food allergens on product ingredient labels. This life-changing app was born from the passion of a powerhouse team of five people, led by Alejandra A. Enriquez, the app's lead iOS developer and designer. Gabe Martinez, the iOS developer, lead project manager, and business of BiteSight, changed careers to become an app developer after the pandemic.
BiteSight uses haptic feedback and VoiceOver to alert users of allergens they've identified, helping blind and low-vision users gain more independence in their daily lives. However, challenges persist in ensuring widespread availability of such supports and tailored assistance for independent, safe nutrition management.
Andrea Campos, the brains behind Yana, has focused on providing access to mental health tools for Spanish-speaking people. Yana is a chatbot-based app designed to tackle negative thoughts linked to anxiety and depression. After its creation, Yana climbed in popularity, helping many Spanish speakers navigate their mental health journey.
These apps, Encantos, BiteSight, and Yana, are all testaments to the creativity and determination of Hispanic and Latin founders and developers. They are not just apps; they are solutions that address real-world challenges, making life easier, safer, and more inclusive for diverse communities.
