United Semiconductors, Space Forge Partner for Space-Based Semiconductor Manufacturing
United Semiconductors and Space Forge have signed a deal to develop semiconductor manufacturing in space. The partnership aims to create a U.S. manufacturing footprint and enhance supply chain resilience.
The companies will focus on producing semiconductors for electromagnetic sensors and quantum computing. Space Forge will design processes and equipment for its ForgeStar satellite, while United Semiconductors will handle material production and customer delivery.
The partnership combines key expertise for rapid development, as noted by United Semiconductors' CEO Geeta Rajagopalan. It also supports Space Forge's goal to establish a U.S. manufacturing presence, as stated by President Michelle Flemming.
Azista BST Aerospace and Airbus, involved in large-scale satellite production and advanced space manufacturing, respectively, indicate the growing relevance of space-based manufacturing technologies.
Following over a year of collaboration and NASA funding, the companies will conduct another flight to produce more semiconductor crystals. United Semiconductors will design equipment and materials, and perform wafer processing and testing. The partnership seeks to demonstrate the unique benefits of space-based semiconductor production.
