United Kingdom Regions with Highest Number of Heat Pumps Installed in New Construction Projects Identified by Poll

In a recent study conducted by Confused Energy, the regions in the UK with the most news builds installing heat pumps, both air source and ground source, have been revealed. The survey found that 53,758 new homes (4.92% of total new builds) have either air source or ground source heat pumps, indicating a continued drive towards more sustainable heating solutions.

The growth in heat pump installations since 2018 has been significant. Wales has seen the highest percentage of ground source heat pump (GSHP) installations in new builds, with four out of the top 10 regions for GSHP installations being in Wales. Cardiff, Swansea, Ceredigion, and Rhondda Cynon Taf are among the Welsh regions leading the way.

Cornwall in the South West takes the lead in the number of heat pump installations, with 3359 installations in new builds. Interestingly, Cornwall also has the highest number of GSHP installations, with 477 installations.

The study, based on EPC ratings issued for new builds, also shows that Cornwall represents 24.42% of new build installations with heat pumps. The North East of England, Scotland, and parts of Wales experienced the largest increase in heat pump installations from 2018 to 2023.

The installation of ground source heat pumps has risen from 0.21% to 0.47% in 2023, a change of 0.26%. Meanwhile, the installation of air source heat pumps has increased dramatically, rising from 2.68% in 2018 to 7.58% in 2023, a jump of 4.9%.

Notably, Pendle in the North East has the highest percentage of ground source heat pump installations (7.78%), but this is based on only 83 installations. On the other hand, King's Lynn and West Norfolk in East Anglia have the highest percentage of new builds installing air source heat pumps (52.12%). East Anglia has the highest percentage of air source heat pump installations in new builds.

The survey does not provide specific information about the growth in ground source heat pump installations since 2018. However, the data clearly shows a trend towards more sustainable heating solutions in the UK, with regions like Wales and Cornwall leading the charge. As the push for sustainability continues, it will be interesting to see how these numbers evolve in the coming years.
