Uber Introduces Option for Users to Prefer Female Drivers over Male Ones
In a bid to improve safety and comfort for their users, ride-hailing giants Uber and Lyft have rolled out features that match women and non-binary users with female drivers.
Uber's New Features
Uber is introducing a pilot program in the U.S. that allows women to choose to be matched with female drivers. This feature, available in other international markets since its launch in Saudi Arabia in 2019, will be piloted in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Detroit.
Riders can select a 'Women Drivers' option in the app, similar to other ride options like Comfort or UberXL, to increase the likelihood of being matched with a female driver. Female drivers can also opt into a setting to prefer female riders, which can be adjusted if they wish to receive requests from all riders.
The new preference options will be piloted in these cities over the next few weeks. If the wait for a woman driver is too long, women riders can still switch to the fastest available pickup. The preference can be turned off at any time if a woman driver wants to resume accepting rides from all users.
Lyft's Women+ Connect Feature
Lyft launched a similar feature called Women+ Connect in 2023. This feature matches women and non-binary drivers with more women and non-binary riders, addressing safety concerns by offering a more inclusive and comfortable experience.
Addressing Safety Concerns
Between 2021 and 2022, Uber received 2,717 reports of sexual assault incidents in the U.S., according to its own safety report. These features are part of Uber's efforts to improve safety for its users.
Uber has worked to ensure these features are usable in different locations around the world, as most Uber drivers are men. The features have since expanded to 40 countries, including France, Mexico, Canada, Germany, and India.
Criticism and Lawsuits
Both Uber and Lyft have faced criticism and lawsuits for not doing enough to address sexual assault on their platforms. The introduction of these features is a response to requests from women riders and drivers for more control over their rides and drives.
The rollout of the new features was announced on Wednesday by Uber vice president of U.S. and Canada operations Camiel Irving in a press release. The new features will give women riders and drivers more control over how they ride and drive on Uber.
