Trump Slams Apple: Build for Indian Market in India, Not USA!

In a surprising turn of events, US President Donald Trump is protesting against Apple manufacturing devices, particularly the iPhone, in India instead of the USA. Addressing a gathering in Doha, Qatar, Trump criticized Apple CEO Tim Cook, saying, "Tim, my pal, I've been nice to you, but you're making devices all over India! I don't want Apple to manufacture in India, just for the local market."

The pressure from Trump for Apple to assemble iPhones in the USA has been ongoing for quite some time. Experts suggest that such a move would necessitate massive investments and escalate the cost of smartphones significantly.

Under Cook's leadership, Apple has established production networks in Asia, primarily in China, over the past few decades. However, the iPhone giant has been strengthening its production in India and Vietnam for years, chiefly due to supply chain disruptions caused by Covid lockdowns in China.

Apple Seeks Asia, Not America

In recent months, Trump's tariff threats have led Apple to rearrange supply chains for the American market. As per current plans, the majority of iPhones sold in the USA will be imported from India. On the other hand, Apple plans to supply the American market with iPads, Mac computers, and Apple Watches almost exclusively from Vietnam, benefiting from lower tariffs in these countries compared to China.

Despite assurances from Trump's Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick that Apple would establish iPhone production in the USA once it had enough precise robotic arms, it seems that the tech giant has decided against it for various reasons, such as inadequate infrastructure, high cost, and potential economic impact.
