Pocket Announces Imminent Shutdown, Transition to Export-Only Mode

In a surprising announcement, popular read-it-later service Pocket, owned by Mozilla since 2017, has declared it will cease operations on July 8, 2025. Once the shutdown date arrives, users will no longer be able to save articles on the platform.

Following the shutdown, Pocket will transition into an export-only mode until October 8, during which users can retrieve their saved articles. After this date, all data will be permanently erased.

Effective immediately, Pocket is discontinuing the acceptance of new premium subscriptions, and existing users will receive automatic cancellations and refunds prior to the cessation of services.

The decision to close stems from Mozilla's belief that internet users' habits have evolved, necessitating a shift in company focus. Pocket, originally launched as a read-it-later utility, had evolved over the years, showcasing high-quality content recommendations, securing a Webby Award in 2020 and the Anthem Award in 2023 for its support of local journalism.

Subsequent to Pocket's shutdown, Mozilla's team and resources will be reallocated to projects better aligning with current user needs. While specifics regarding these projects are yet to be disclosed, Mozilla aims to continue providing support to users through various initiatives.

For users seeking alternatives, apps such as Matter provide similar functionality with additional features like article transcription and integration with other apps. Users will have to find and migrate to these alternatives to continue using a read-it-later service.

Key dates and actions for Pocket users include:- May 22, 2025: Pocket browser extensions will no longer be available for installation.- July 8, 2025: Pocket services will shut down, and users will lose access to the website, apps, and API.- October 8, 2025: Users can still export their saved content (lists, archives, favorites, notes, and highlights) and reinstall the app until this date.

Amidst the transition, users might find it beneficial to explore alternative gadgets such as smartphones that offer read-it-later apps like Matter, which also provide extra features such as article transcription and integration with other apps. With Pocket shutting down, technology advancements offer various solutions to continue managing readings efficiently.
