THW Celebrates 75 Years of Saving Lives in Bavaria
The Bavarian Technical Relief Agency (THW) is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. Since its founding in 1950, it has evolved to protect the population from various emergencies, with around 16,000 volunteers dedicating their free time to this cause.
Initially established to clear war rubble and protect citizens from post-WWII hazards, the THW has expanded its competencies over the decades. In recent years, it has responded to major disasters such as the 2021 flood in the Ahr valley and the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, where it has procured aid worth over 138 million euros.
The THW's growth is reflected in its Bavarian branch, which now comprises 111 local associations. The oldest among them is Nuremberg, founded in 1950. These volunteers contribute countless hours, as seen during the 2022 flood disaster caused by low-pressure area 'Orinoco'.
To mark this significant milestone, the Bavarian State Chancellery is hosting a reception for around 350 THW members in Munich. The THW's commitment, from its early days to present, underscores its vital role in Bavarian civil defense and emergency response.
