Three Montana Teens Arrested for Illegal Mountain Lion Kill in Yellowstone
Three Montana teenagers have been arrested and sentenced for illegally killing a mountain lion in Yellowstone National Park. The hunters, who shared photos of their kill on social media, were identified and caught after fellow hunters recognised the location as Yellowstone.
The incident occurred on Dec. 12, 2018. The group killed the mountain lion and falsely reported its location to Montana's Fish, Wildlife, and Parks office. During questioning, the hunters struggled to keep their stories straight and eventually confessed to the illegal act.
Yellowstone's chief ranger described their actions as an 'egregious act'. The hunters, who all took shots at the mountain lion, inflicted a total of eight gunshot wounds before it died in protected territory. There's no specific information about an individual who reported the hunters' actions to authorities, but it's possible such cases occur.
Each hunter was sentenced to pay $1,666 in restitution, lose their hunting and fishing privileges for three years, and serve three years of unsupervised probation. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting and protecting wildlife in national parks.
