The reasons behind the high rate of employee departures at Musk's artificial intelligence company?

In a recent development, several executives at Elon Musk's artificial intelligence (AI) startup, xAI, have left the company following clashes with two of Musk's advisers, Jared Birchall and John Hering, over concerns about the startup's management and financial health, according to a report.

The report, based on claims made by 'people familiar with the matter,' does not identify which executives it is referring to. One of the departed executives was Mike Liberatore, the former chief financial officer of xAI, who joined the company in April 2022 but left in July 2022. After his departure, Liberatore was hired by OpenAI, a company run by Sam Altman, a rival of Elon Musk.

The war for AI supremacy has led to intense competition among companies, with Meta offering high salaries to attract AI talent. However, xAI's retention rate for AI engineers is reportedly lower than that of rival firm Anthropic, a report in June suggested.

Some executives felt there was no formal chain of command at the company, and concerns were raised about unrealistic financial projections. The WSJ report suggests that some of the executives' departures may have been due to internal conflicts over the management style at xAI and disagreements over its financial projections.

The ongoing legal battle between Musk and OpenAI, led by Altman, has also complicated the industry outlook. In August, xAI sued a former engineer who left the firm to work for OpenAI, alleging that he stole trade secrets. The ongoing legal battle is expected to result in significant legal fees for both parties.

Recently, xAI has experienced a high turnover rate of top executives, with Linda Yaccarino, the former CEO of X (Musk's social media site), leaving the company in July 2023 after having been with the company for over two years. Robert Keele, the former general counsel of xAI, also left the company in early August 2024 after just over a year with the firm. Keele announced his departure on his LinkedIn, where he expressed love for his family and appreciation for the team at xAI.

Alex Spiro, Musk's attorney, has stated that there is no dispute at xAI and that the company's financials are not improper. Birchall, a key advisor to Musk, holds multiple executive roles across Musk's organizations, including Excession, the Musk Foundation, Neuralink, and xAI.

Personal rivalries, such as Musk's ongoing legal battle with Altman, have further complicated the industry outlook. Despite being involved in legal disputes with Musk, OpenAI maintains its position as the leading company in its industry.

As the competition in the AI industry heats up, it remains to be seen how xAI will navigate these challenges and whether it can regain its footing in the market.
