Nintendo's Switch 2 Shatters Sales Records

In the first quarter of its release, Nintendo's Switch 2 has sold nearly 6 million units globally, making it the fastest-selling video game hardware in US history. The system sold over 1.6 million units in June alone, surpassing the PlayStation 4's record.

The surge in sales has led to a significant increase in Nintendo's revenue and profit. The company's net sales increased by 132.1 percent year-on-year to 572.3 billion yen ($3.8 billion), while its operating profit rose by 4.4 percent to 56.9 billion yen ($378.2 million).

The success of the Switch 2 can be attributed to its popular launch title, Mario Kart World, which has sold 5.63 million units worldwide. The higher price of the Switch 2 compared to the original Switch contributed to the increase in net sales.

Regarding software sales, Nintendo reports a 142.5 percent increase in video game platform sales, amounting to 555.5 billion yen in the quarter. Among the top-selling games, native Switch 2 titles like Mario Kart World ranked highly, with several others benefiting from backward compatibility. The best-selling accessory was the Pro Controller for Switch 2.

In North America, the Switch 2 has been a major success, with over 1 million units sold there in June 2025 alone. The US sales performance contributed heavily to the record-setting global sales. Data on other regions are less specific, but worldwide sales numbers are reported.

Despite market challenges such as increased US levies and supply constraints earlier in the launch phase, the Switch 2 has been the primary sales driver for Nintendo, contributing to a greater increase in net sales. The original Nintendo Switch also saw a decline in sales, with a 53.5 percent year-on-year decrease during Q1. However, it still reached 980,000 units in sales during the same period, bringing its lifetime sales to 153.2 million units.

In the IP related business, sales declined by 4.4 percent year-on-year to 16.7 billion yen, largely due to dwindling revenue associated with The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The decline in digital sales was mainly due to a decrease in sales of downloadable versions of packaged software and the effects of a stronger yen.

Nintendo is sticking with its current fiscal forecast and expects Switch 2 hardware sales to reach 15 million units by the end of the fiscal year in March 2026. The company continues to capitalise on the success of the Switch 2, with a promising lineup of games and accessories planned for the future.
