Testing iPhone Air battery life: How it compares against rivals
In the realm of smartphone technology, battery life remains a crucial factor for users. Let's delve into a comparison of the latest offerings from Apple and Samsung, focusing on the iPhone 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, and the Samsung Galaxy S25 series.
The iPhone 13 Pro Max managed to hold an impressive 80% charge after five hours of video streaming, while its successor, the iPhone 14 Pro Max, fared even better, reaching 88% under the same conditions. The Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge, on the other hand, dropped to 67%, and the Galaxy S25 Ultra maintained 75% of its charge.
When it comes to endurance in the Tom's Guide Battery Test, the iPhone Air emerged victorious, lasting an impressive 12 hours and 2 minutes. The Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge followed closely behind with 11 hours and 48 minutes. The latest additions to Apple's lineup, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 17, clocked in at 12:47 and 17:54, respectively, in the same test.
Interestingly, phones that consistently make the 'best phone battery life' list tend to last 14 hours or more in the same test. This suggests that both the iPhone Air and the Samsung Galaxy S25 series have strong battery performance.
Apple's MagSafe Battery pack, retailing for $99, offers a 65% additional charge for the iPhone Air. However, it may not be ideal due to its added bulk. For instance, after five hours of video streaming, the iPhone Air was at 81%, while the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge was at 67%. If extrapolated, the iPhone Air could potentially deliver 26 hours and 19 minutes of runtime with the MagSafe Battery pack.
The iPhone Air also claims to offer 'all-day battery life,' and it indeed holds its own in continuous web surfing over 5G using T-Mobile's network at 150 nits of screen brightness. According to Apple, the iPhone Air lasts for 27 hours of local video playback and 22 hours of streamed video playback.
Comparatively, the Samsung Galaxy S25 series offers impressive battery life, but it remains to be seen how the MagSafe Battery pack might impact the balance between battery life and portability for iPhone users.
