Tesla, the leading electric vehicle manufacturer, has taken a significant step towards its autonomous ride-hailing vision with the launch of its Robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, on June 22, 2025. However, the trademark for the service's name, "Tesla Robotaxi," remains pending, as of June 12, 2025.

In a bid to secure exclusive naming rights for its autonomous ride-hailing service, Tesla filed three new applications for the phrase "Tesla Robotaxi" on May 31, 2025. The applications, however, have not yet been approved by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

The USPTO's delay in approving the "Tesla Robotaxi" trademark applications is due to concerns about the term's widespread use across the autonomous vehicle industry. Similarly, the USPTO also raised concerns about the "Cybercab" trademark, citing its similarity to numerous other trademarks involving the word "Cyber."

Despite the ongoing trademark process, Tesla pressed ahead with the launch of its Robotaxi service, making it available to Full Self-Driving subscribers as an invite-only pilot. The service's mobile app and digital services, also intended to be named "Tesla Robotaxi," are part of Tesla's comprehensive autonomous ride-hailing platform.

Tesla's initial attempts to trademark "Robotaxi" and "Cybercab" were made in October 2024. However, a ruling only issued seven months later in May 2025. The USPTO's concerns with these applications were primarily due to their generic nature and widespread use.

In response to the USPTO's requests for additional details, Tesla has filed a new application for "Tesla Robotaxi." The new term is more distinctive, reducing the likelihood of rejection as too generic. Despite these efforts, it is uncertain when the USPTO will approve Tesla's applications, and they are unlikely to be approved before the planned launch of the robotaxi service on June 12, 2025.

As Tesla continues to develop and deploy its autonomous ride-hailing service, the company is working diligently to secure the trademark for "Tesla Robotaxi." The pending trademark applications underscore the challenges faced by companies in protecting their brand names amidst the rapid advancement of technology and industry trends.

The company, Tesla, filed a new application for "Tesla Robotaxi," seeking to secure exclusive naming rights for its autonomous ride-hailing service. However, as of June 22, 2025, the USPTO has yet to approve the "Tesla Robotaxi" trademark applications due to concerns about its widespread use and generic nature within the autonomous vehicle industry.
