Tesla Model Y stays as the top-selling battery electric vehicle (BEV) in Europe for 2024, yet Tesla encounters a slow beginning in 2025.
The Tesla Model Y claimed the title of Europe's best-selling battery-electric vehicle (BEV) in 2024, with over 209,000 registrations. Despite a 17% drop in registrations compared to the previous year, the Model Y's dominance in the BEV market occurred despite a slow start in key regions such as France and Germany.
The Model Y's success was driven by strong demand in key markets such as the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark, and Norway. In contrast, only 1,141 Tesla vehicles were registered in France in January 2025, marking a 63% drop compared to the same month last year. Sales of Tesla vehicles in France dropped by a similar margin, with the overall EV market seeing a modest drop of 0.5% in January 2025.
The Dacia Sandero became Europe's overall best-selling vehicle in 2024, while the Model Y maintained its lead in the BEV category. The Model Y ranked as the fourth most registered car overall in Europe in 2024, according to data from Jato Dynamics.
The overall BEV market share dropped slightly from 15.7% in 2023 to 15.4% in 2024. BEV registrations in Europe fell by 1.2% year-over-year (YoY) in 2025.
The Tesla Model 3 was the second best-selling BEV in Europe in 2024, with nearly 113,000 registrations. However, the Model Y's position as Europe's best-selling BEV in 2025 remains uncertain due to its slow start in key regions like France and Germany.
The Chinese automaker BYD represents the strongest competitor to Tesla's Model Y in the European BEV market in 2025. BYD has surpassed Tesla's sales in several European countries and expanded local production in Hungary and Turkey. Volkswagen, Ford, and Hyundai-Kia also increase competition, but BYD is the main challenger to Tesla's dominance.
Political controversies surrounding CEO Elon Musk may be influencing Tesla's slow start in 2025 in Europe. Elon Musk's vocal support for controversial political figures in Europe and the U.S. has led to backlash from some European consumers and businesses. Some companies in Germany have opted to exclude Tesla from corporate fleet purchases due to Musk's political statements.
The success of the Tesla Model Y in the BEV market in 2024 is significant, as it demonstrates its popularity and market influence in Europe. However, the outlook for 2025 remains uncertain, with BYD and other competitors posing a significant threat to Tesla's dominance.
