Tesla is set to initiate a robo-taxi service in Austin, Texas, commencing in June. Furthermore, the company will not offer Full Self-Driving (FSD) packages in Europe during the first quarter.

Tesla Advances Towards Global Autonomous Driving

Tesla, the electric vehicle giant, has announced plans to launch its unsupervised Full Self-Driving (FSD) feature in Austin, Texas by June 2025, marking a major step towards national deployment in the US [1][3]. This ambitious move is part of Tesla's vision to extend autonomous driving to most countries worldwide in the coming year.

The announcement follows Tesla's Q4 2024 report, which showed mixed results. While the report contained optimistic statements about the future, including the launch of the robotaxi service, it also revealed disappointing data on revenue and profit [5]. Despite this, Tesla's stock rose by up to 5% post-market following the report [6].

In preparation for the unsupervised FSD launch, Tesla is currently using internet videos to train FSD for China. However, the Chinese government's policy of prohibiting the evaluation of local videos in the US has caused some delays [7]. Supervised FSD is currently available in the US and is expected to be available in Europe and China from Q1 2025, pending regulatory approval [8]. Regulatory approval for supervised FSD in Europe is expected in May 2025, and could take another year [9].

Tesla has been testing its FSD capabilities for some time. The beta test for FSD began at the end of 2020 in North America [4]. In addition, a video was published showing new electric vehicles driving from the factory in Fremont to their parking spaces without a human at the wheel [10].

As part of its global expansion plans, Tesla will conduct tests with unsupervised FSD in other US states in 2025, with several more cities likely to be added by the end of the year [11]. However, the upgrade for the 2019 Autopilot hardware will be challenging, but Tesla plans to complete it [12].

Tesla's ultimate goal is to have all of North America operating with the robotaxi service by the end of 2026 [3]. While Europe and China have not yet seen confirmed unsupervised FSD releases, it is plausible that progress in these regions depends heavily on governmental approvals, which tend to be stringent and can delay full deployment [1][2].

In a related development, Tesla confirmed the production of a more affordable electric vehicle in the first half of 2025 [13]. This move is expected to further expand Tesla's market reach and contribute to its goal of accelerating the world's transition to sustainable energy.

  1. Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology, an essential component of its automotive sector, is planned for global expansion, starting with the launch in Austin, Texas by June 2025, with the ultimate goal of having all of North America operating with the robotaxi service by the end of 2026.
  2. While Tesla's unsupervised FSD is expected to be available in Europe and China from Q1 2025, pending regulatory approval, the Chinese government's policy and stringent regulations in Europe can cause delays in full deployment.
  3. In an effort to expand its market reach and further accelerate the world's transition to sustainable energy, Tesla has also confirmed the production of a more affordable electric vehicle in the first half of 2025.
  4. To ensure the smooth operation of its FSD technology, Tesla is currently using internet videos to train FSD for China, although this process has been delayed due to the Chinese government's policy of prohibiting the evaluation of local videos in the US.
