Tesla Initiates Physical Recall as Vehicles Experience Unforeseen Disintegration
Fresh Take:
Tesla's announcing a recall on over 9,000 Model X SUVs due to a trim separating issue, the NHTSA reveals. This buggy booger affects the 2016 model, and around 10% of vehicles sporting this blemish, as per Tesla.
Here's the lowdown on this automotive annoyance: The Model X is sporting a cosmetic applique at the front of the roof (the front applique) and one at the center roof (the spine applique). These guys are glued on using urethane. However, if the applique-to-urethane interface lacks primer, over time, the adhesion may weaken, leading the applique to depart from the vehicle.
Owners better keep their ears peeled for any telltale sounds. Prior to separating, an applique without primer might create a detectable noise, and you might spot the applique popping loose.
Tesla Recalls all Cybertrucks over Accelerator Pedal Debacle
Back in November 2020, Tesla initiated a voluntary recall for the same issue, but alas, they didn't sniff out all the affected vehicles at the time. The recall notice notes that earlier, the inspection method involved pulling the applique with a force of 60N. Any appliques that stayed put were assumed to meet the standards, but now, the carmaker realizes that the pull force wasn't sufficient to spot all the potentially problematic appliques.
Reuters points out that most of Tesla's recalls usually require a software update to sort things out. However, this time, an in-person inspection and remedy will be required.
"While we haven’t heard of any accidents or injuries linked to this condition, if the applique separates while the vehicle’s in motion, it could create a hazard for other road users, potentially causing injuries or crashes," Tesla warns.
Tesla wasn't reachable for comments. Since the company got rid of its PR department, this isn't surprising.
Back in April, the Cybertruck seemed to share the same glue issues. The company issued a recall for all Cybertrucks sold due to the pads on the accelerator pedals sliding off and getting jammed.
Taking Care of Tesla-Troubles
- Keep an Eye Out: Inspect your vehicle visually for any signs of delamination or separation in the trim panels. If you hear any strange noises or vibrations, that could be a sign as well.
- Follow Tesla's Lead: Stay informed about any recalls and updates from Tesla. If you suspect issues with your vehicle, reach out to Tesla's customer service or visit a local dealership.
- Timely Repairs: If Tesla finds any problems, they'll likely need to inspect and repair the affected areas, which should be covered under warranty if applicable.
- Precautionary Measures: Until the issues are addressed, be cautious while driving at high speeds.
Maintaining Tesla Sweetness
- Regular Servicing: Schedule regular maintenance to catch any potential issues early.
- Stay Alert: Keep an eye on official recall notices and updates from Tesla.
- In future, the problem of applique separation may be rectified by applying a primer before gluing the applique to the urethane roof of Tesla vehicles to ensure stronger adhesion.
- As technology advances, Tesla might consider using alternative materials for their appliques that offer better adhesion properties, preventing such issues from arising in the first place.
- In the future, it would be beneficial for Tesla to implement more rigorous inspection methods during production to ensure all potentially problematic appliques are identified and addressed before they reach customers.
- If Tesla continues to encounter these issues, they may need to re-evaluate their quality control procedures and technology to prevent similar problems from recurring in their future tech innovations.
