Tesla commits to a water agreement for water recycling purposes - Tesla agrees to water recycling agreement

Good news for Tesla and the environment alike! The American electric vehicle giant can carry on with its full-scale recycling of factory wastewater in Grünheide, near Berlin, thanks to a brand-new water agreement. Details of the agreement, struck with the Strausberg-Erkner (WSE) regional water association, indicate higher pollution limit values for wastewater from the Grünheide plant. Months of negotiation preceded this agreement.

What makes this development significant is that the recycled wastewater now resembles domestic sewage water, causing no environmental concerns but adhering to contractually agreed limit values.

"We're pumped that the agreement signing paves the way for secure and sustainable water usage in the region," said Tesla's Grünheide plant manager, André Thierig. "This contract means our water-saving recycling practices will continue unabated."

Assuring sustainability, Tesla confirms that it can recycle 100% of wastewater generated during production. Remarkably, this means returning almost 400,000 cubic meters of its contractually allocated water quota back to WSE.

Protests from environmental activists

Since the inception of the factory in Brandenburg, water consumption has sparked heated debates. Environmental groups express concerns over potential repercussions on the region's drinking water supply, as part of the Gigafactory lies within a water protection area. On Thursday, the "Turn off the tap for Tesla" alliance protested the new water agreement.

While Tesla maintains that water consumption at the Grünheide factory is lower than industry norms and has significantly decreased, the company hopes the contract will silence public concerns. The sole European factory of Tesla CEO Elon Musk has been producing electric cars in Grünheide since 2022.

Tesla's German Boom Stalled in May

As Germany's electric vehicle market continued to surge in May, Tesla missed out on the excitement. According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority, around 1,200 Teslas were newly registered on the road in May, a figure that represents a staggering 35% decrease compared to the same period last year.

  1. Unsurprisingly, the new water agreement between Tesla and the Strausberg-Erkner (WSE) regional water association in Grünheide, near Berlin, allows for the recycling of Tesla's factory wastewater to resemble domestic sewage water, adhering to contractually agreed limit values and aligning with environmental-science guidelines.
  2. Furthermore, with this agreement, Tesla can now recycle 100% of its factory wastewater, displaying a commitment to finance-friendly, technology-driven sustainability practices and returning almost 400,000 cubic meters of its water quota to WSE, setting an example for the community policy in the region.
