Tech giants Alibaba and ByteDance launch university recruitment drives, fueled by the surge in AI technologies

In a bid to meet the growing demands of AI-powered products and services, Chinese tech giants Alibaba Group Holding and ByteDance are increasing their recruitment of fresh graduates. Both companies have launched extensive campus recruitment campaigns, focusing heavily on AI-related roles.

Alibaba Group Holding, the owner of the South China Morning Post, aims to hire over 7,000 graduates for its 2026 intake. More than 60% of these roles are focused on artificial intelligence, particularly in algorithms and AI talent training. ByteDance, the company behind TikTok and Douyin, is offering around 5,000 jobs, marking a 23% increase in research and development positions compared to the previous year, with product management roles doubling.

The recruitment drives are targeted at graduates finishing between late 2025 and 2026. Alibaba's campaign is focused on its e-commerce unit, Taobao and Tmall Group, while ByteDance's drive encompasses various roles across divisions such as TikTok, Douyin, Volcano Engine, and other AI-driven units.

ByteDance's Volcano Engine platform, which focuses on cloud and AI services, is actively recruiting R&D talent in areas like back-end development and big data, alongside non-R&D roles such as product management and operations.

Both companies emphasize AI as a core driver of future growth and are investing in talent to meet expanding needs in AI-powered products and services. This aggressive hiring reflects wider competition in the global AI talent market, as Chinese tech firms vie to strengthen capabilities amid challenges such as U.S. export controls on advanced AI chips.

Alibaba Group Holding also plans to invest more resources in training "algorithm and AI talent". ByteDance, like Alibaba, is a Chinese tech giant, while ByteDance's recruitment campaign details were not provided in the article. ByteDance's number of "product" jobs available in its recruitment campaign will reportedly double compared to the previous year, but the company did not specify the number of roles related to artificial intelligence in its recruitment campaign.
