Tablet sales worldwide surge for the first time in three years during Q1 2024, as per IDC research.

Tablet Market Shows Promising Signs of Recovery in First Quarter, According to IDC

Preliminary reports indicate that the global tablet market may be on the mend, as suggested by IDC senior analyst Anurupa Natraj. This optimistic outlook stems from the projected cycle of device updates and the potential positive impact of artificial intelligence services, similar to their benefits for other devices.

In the first quarter, Apple's tablet shipments totaled 9.9 million units, marking an 8.5% decrease year-over-year. This decline is attributed to the tech giant's strategy of focusing on selling existing inventory ahead of introducing new models in the second quarter. Despite the drop, Apple maintained its position as market leader with a 32% share of the global market.

Samsung followed closely behind, selling 6.7 million tablets in the first quarter, a decrease of 5.8% compared to the previous year. IDC attributes this reduction to heightened competition from other brands and the absence of new models. Samsung currently holds the number two spot with a 21.7% share of the global market.

Meanwhile, Chinese manufacturers Huawei, Lenovo, and Xiaomi experienced growth in Q1. Huawei's tablet sales reached 2.9 million units (+43.66% year-over-year), giving the company a 9.4% share of the market (up from 6.6% in the previous year). Lenovo sold 2.1 million tablets (+13.2%) for a 7% share (6.2% the previous year), while Xiaomi's sales climbed to 1.8 million units (+92.6%) for a 5.9% market share (3.1% the previous year).

These trends suggest that the Chinese tablet market may be experiencing a recovery, with national subsidies, new product launches, and ecosystem integration serving as potential catalysts. The exact impact of AI services on the tablet market is not yet determined, but the growth recorded in the PC market for AI-related devices may offer some insight.
