Survey: 37% of SaaS Users Rely Solely on Native Backup, 49% Experienced Data Loss

A recent survey, 'Overlooked and Under-Protected: How the SaaS Data Gap Threatens Resilience', conducted by Oribi and DeepSeas between April and May 2025, has revealed concerning gaps in SaaS data protection. The study, published on both companies' websites and in cybersecurity magazines, highlights the need for robust measures to safeguard data and ensure business resilience.

The survey found that 37 percent of senior IT decision-makers rely solely on native backup capabilities for SaaS data protection, which may not provide sufficient security or flexibility. Moreover, 49 percent of respondents reported experiencing a major data loss event in the past year, indicating the urgency of the issue.

To address these challenges, respondents emphasized the importance of several key features. 59 percent highlighted the need for end-to-end encryption and immutable storage in modern SaaS backup solutions. Additionally, 61 percent stressed the significance of physically segregating data from the SaaS provider's environment for true independence. This was further supported by 62 percent of respondents who agreed that physical segregation is a key requirement for modern SaaS backup.

However, the recovery process remains a concern. 11 percent of respondents reported that it would take a month or longer to recover data after a loss incident, or that they might not be able to recover it at all. This underscores the need for granular access and deletion controls to meet GDPR requirements and new regulations such as DORA.

The survey underscores the pressing need for improved SaaS data protection. With a significant proportion of respondents experiencing data loss and acknowledging the importance of robust security measures, it is clear that businesses must prioritize end-to-end encryption, immutable storage, and physical segregation of data. Moreover, they should ensure they have efficient recovery processes in place and comply with relevant regulations. The full report and official sources can be found on the websites of Oribi (oribi.io) and DeepSeas (deepseas.com), as well as in specialist cybersecurity publications.
