In the vast expanse of the White Desert National Park in Egypt, a unique event took place on the night of September 7-8, 2022. The moon, during its eclipse, displayed a mesmerising cosmic ammonite shell-like pattern, known as a lunar swirl. This captivating sight was skillfully captured by photographer Osama Fathi.

Fathi, a talented shutterbug, utilised a Nikon Z6III camera equipped with a Nikkor Z 180-600 mm long lens to create this masterpiece. The image, a blend of artistic beauty and educational visualization, presents the shifting face of the blood moon against the stillness of the desert below.

In addition to the 180-600 mm telephoto lens, Fathi also employed 50 mm and 14 mm lenses to image the chalk formations of the White Desert. Each phase of the total lunar eclipse is precisely captured in the image, showcasing the red colour that earned the eclipse its name.

The photographing of the lunar eclipse was no easy feat. Fathi worked under red light to preserve his night vision, a crucial aspect in capturing such celestial events.
