Stolen UK Cars: Range Rover's 5,000-Mile Journey to Karachi
Over 130,000 vehicles are stolen annually in the UK, with many snatched from driveways or streets outside homes. Recently, a Range Rover from Harrogate took an unexpected journey, ending up 5,000 miles away in Karachi, Pakistan. Interpol is now involved in tracking such cases.
The Range Rover, stolen in November 2022, briefly appeared in Karachi earlier this year. This isn't an isolated incident. In 2022, a luxury Bentley stolen in London was also found in Pakistan. The Range Rover Sport has been the most targeted vehicle in the UK since 2022.
Gangs are using advanced tech to bypass keyless entry systems, shipping stolen cars abroad swiftly. The demand for foreign luxury SUVs in Pakistan has surged, with buyers often unaware of a car's stolen status. Stolen vehicles are often broken down and sold in parts or at second-hand dealerships and scrapyards abroad. Tesla, once a favourite target, upgraded its security systems in the late 2020s to combat this issue.
Interpol has joined the investigation, requesting an international probe. The UK's stolen car problem is reaching global proportions, with Pakistan emerging as a hotspot. Awareness and stricter regulations are needed to combat this growing issue.
