Starlink Gets Green Light for India Launch, Partners with Major Telcos
SpaceX's Starlink has received a provisional green light from India's Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to provide satellite internet services. The company is set to launch its service in India later in 2025, facing competition from the likes of Reliance's Jio Platforms, Eutelsat's OneWeb, and Amazon Kuiper.
Starlink has partnered with several major players to bring its service to India. Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio, and Tata Communications are among the telecom companies teaming up with Starlink. Additionally, data centre operators like Sify Technologies, STT, Equinix, CtrlS Datacenters, and internet exchange providers such as DE-CIX and Extreme IXP are also on board. Starlink's internet speeds in India are expected to range from 25 Mbit/s to a substantial 220 Mbit/s.
India, with its vast unconnected population, is a crucial market for global satellite companies. Starlink's entry is expected to bridge the digital divide, particularly in rural areas where traditional internet infrastructure is lacking.
Starlink's provisional spectrum approval paves the way for its launch in India later this year. With a range of partnerships and competitive speeds, Starlink is poised to make a significant impact in the Indian market, bringing high-speed internet to millions of unconnected people.
