All Aboard the History Express
Struggling for visibility and the risk of being forgotten are concerns shared by numerous memorial sites. Wolfgang Hauck, from the KunstBauStelle in Landsberg am Lech, explains that the app aims to shed light on these sites, sparking curiosity about the past. Empowering the younger generation by fostering critical engagement and encouraging civil society involvement is a primary focus. The project strives to ensure a barrier-free and inclusive user experience.
Stepping into the Digital Past
The "NS-Memorial Sites" project expands the pre-existing BayernHistory app, which already hosts a local history section and audio trail project. Now, the third pillar Zeroes in on the period between 1933 and 1945, including the path into National Socialism and the processing of NS injustice in the post-1945 years.
Innovative Features, Unlimited Learning
Be prepared for engaging multimedia tours, interactive formats, and even virtual reality experiences. Tap into digital exhibitions previously shown in museums to keep their stories alive. The app will offer much more than just renowned institutions or memorial sites—you may stumble upon a forgotten street with a significant history hidden just under the surface. "When I pass by, I can discover: something happened here," Hauck explains.
Partners in Crime Fighting Forgotten History
The initiative includes collaboration from the Bavarian concentration camp memorials, historian Edith Raim, the city of Landshut, and countless volunteers. The BerlinHistory association, which offers an app for Berlin's historical exploration, joins the project, too. Funding comes from the German Foundation for Engagement and Volunteering, to the tune of 100,000 euros.
