Spot, the Robot Dog, Lands First Job in Oil & Gas Industry

Spot, the internet-famous robot dog from Boston Dynamics, has found its first job in the oil and gas industry. The Norwegian company Aker BP has leased Spot to carry out inspections and improve safety on its offshore platforms.

Spot will be put to work on an oil and gas production ship in the Norwegian Sea. Its tasks include running inspections, detecting potential hydrocarbon leaks, and generating reports based on the data it collects. This is a significant step for the robot, which has previously been used by a bomb squad in Massachusetts for similar tasks.

Aker BP's CEO, Karl Johnny Hersvik, has deployed Spot with the aim of making offshore operations safer and more efficient. The company hopes that by using Spot, it can reduce human exposure to hazardous environments. Boston Dynamics, the company behind Spot, has been promoting the robot for use in various industries, including construction, public safety, and entertainment, since it became commercially available in September 2019.

Spot's new role at Aker BP marks another milestone in the robot's commercial journey. By leveraging Spot's capabilities, Aker BP seeks to enhance safety and efficiency in its offshore operations. The robot's versatility continues to impress, demonstrating its potential in a wide range of industries.
