Soltau Pioneers AI in Local Administration, Boosts Data Security and Workforce Support

Soltau, a city in Lower Saxony, Germany, is pioneering the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in local administration. The city's mayor, Olaf Klang, has emphasized the importance of data security in this process, aiming to support tasks rather than replace staff.

Soltau has chosen digitalization over traditional concrete investments, creating attractive, mobile workplaces. The city's small town hall, the smallest compared to its population, is a testament to its commitment to digitalization over the past three decades.

The city has partnered with an AI chatbot, Sofia, a version of Gemini, to advance its administration. This move aims to address the impending departure of baby boomer employees and skilled worker shortages. Soltau is the first administration in Germany to use AI internally in this manner.

The AI system supports tasks such as research in the in-house database, rather than replacing people. Millions of files and correspondence, including documents dating back to 1946, have been digitized to facilitate this process.

Soltau's innovative use of AI in local administration is a significant step forward. By prioritizing data security and supporting staff, the city is well-positioned to navigate future challenges in its workforce. As the first administration in Germany to use AI internally, Soltau sets a precedent for other cities to follow.
