Skynopy Lands ESA Deal to Boost Satellite Data Rates
Skynopy, a French ground station startup, has secured a European Space Agency (ESA) contract. The deal aims to commercialize adaptive modulation technology, which can significantly boost satellite data download rates.
The contract, part of ESA's Programme for Userbase Enhancement (PUSH), will support the integration of Skynopy's software with three satellite operators. These operators will be selected through a competitive process next month, with details of the selection schedule not yet provided.
The technology in focus, Variable Coding and Modulation (VCM) and Adaptive Coding and Modulation (ACM), enables satellites to adjust their signal strength and efficiency in response to changing conditions. According to Skynopy's cofounder and chief technology officer, Antonin Hirsch, modern satellites are already equipped with radios supporting these dynamic modulations. The successful integration could potentially double satellite data download rates.
The contract, worth 75,000 euros ($89,000), will fund Skynopy's work with the selected satellite operators. The goal is to commercialize this adaptive modulation technology, promising enhanced efficiency and faster data transfer for satellite communications.
