Great Wall Motor's Tank 500 Hi4-T and Hi4-Z PHEV SUVs Unveiled with Upgrades

Great Wall Motor (GWM) has unveiled the refreshed Tank 500 Hi4-T and Hi4-Z plug-in hybrid off-road SUVs, retaining their pricing in the Chinese market at around 335,000 yuan (approx. $46,800 USD) for the Hi4-T and 363,800 yuan (approx. $50,900 USD) for the Hi4-Z.

The new Tank 500 boasts subtle design updates, enhanced advanced driving assistance capabilities, and powerful, differentiated PHEV powertrains. The exterior features a revised front grille and a new “GWM” logo on the rear, while maintaining the same body dimensions (5078/1934/1905 mm) and wheelbase of 2850 mm.

New Features and Improvements

The Tank 500 now comes equipped with a Hesai ATX lidar on the roof, along with cameras added to the front fenders and rear spoiler to support upgraded advanced driving assistance capabilities. The rear seat backrest now offers an adjustable angle of 25° to 35°, and the center console houses a 50 W refrigerator with a temperature range of -6°C to 50°C.

The dashboard does not appear to have any changes regarding the body dimensions or approach/departure angles. However, the new Tank 500 does feature a 12.3-inch full LCD instrument panel and a 14.6-inch central control screen.

Advanced Driving and Powertrain

Both models have been upgraded with enhanced advanced driving assistance capabilities, though exact features were not enumerated. The Hi4-T retains a mechanical 4WD system with a transfer case and differential locks suitable for off-road use, whereas the Hi4-Z features a more sophisticated setup without a mechanical connection between front and rear electric motors, employing multi-link rear suspension for improved on-road dynamics.

The Hi4-Z’s combined system allows a total driving range of about 1096 km and emphasizes improved battery safety and boot space due to its battery layout. The Hi4-Z is powered by a 2.0T engine with dual electric motors, outputting a combined system power of 645 kW (865 hp). The Hi4-T, on the other hand, is equipped with a 185 kW (248 hp) 2.0T engine and an electric motor, outputting a comprehensive system power of 300 kW (402 hp).
