Samsung's Upcoming Galaxy Z Flip Might Experience an Enhanced Battery Capacity and Larger Cover Display Screen
I enjoyed testing out the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 last year, but its battery life was disappointing, particularly when compared to its non-foldable flagship counterparts. Despite featuring rapid charging technology, the Z Flip 3's battery is among the smallest you can find in a premium handset.
However, there's some promising news on the horizon, as suggested by a few leaks from reputable sources. As reported by 9to5Google, and subsequently by a Dutch site called GalaxyClub, the upcoming Z Flip 4 might come equipped with a 3400 mAh battery instead of the 3300 mAh found in its predecessor.
Although the increase is minimal, it's better than nothing, and it suggests Samsung's efforts to enhance battery life while maintaining the Z Flip's foldable design. To accommodate this, the Z Flip 4 is rumored to have two batteries. However, when compared to other flagships that boast 5000 mAh battery packs, the Z Flip 4's battery size still falls short.
It's also speculated that the Z Flip 4 might feature a larger cover display, which will make animated screensavers even more fun if the rumors are true. According to XDA Developers and Ross Young, another trusted leaker, the Z Flip 4 could start off with a 2-inch cover screen, rather than the 1.9-inch screen found on the current model.
Young also revealed information about Samsung's other folding model, the Z Fold 4. He mentioned that it could be comparable in size to what he calls the "Google foldable," which is likely a reference to a foldable Pixel. Previous rumors indicated the possibility of a foldable Pixel, but Young reported last year that Google had scrapped the project once it realized it couldn't match Samsung's offerings at the same price point. It now seems that a new, different foldable Pixel may be in the works.
"Z Fold 4 and Google foldable will have similar sized foldable displays," tweeted Young, adding that Google's cover display could measure 5.8-inches and offer a wider aspect ratio than Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 4.
The Galaxy Z Flip 3 was a hit, selling over 1 million units within just two months of its launch. It significantly improved upon its predecessors' form factor and enhanced the camera specifications. However, there were concerns about its reception, given that folding phones are not yet a mainstream phenomenon.
We don't have a clear timeline for when Samsung will launch its next batch of foldable devices, but we may hear more updates during the summer, as the last two generations of flip phones have been released in the summer.
The increase in battery capacity for the upcoming Z Flip 4, with a reported 3400 mAh, indicates a potential future enhancement in battery life for Samsung's foldable devices. This year might also see the release of a new, foldable Pixel, as hinted by Ross Young's tweet, which could potentially challenge Samsung's offerings in the market.
