Samsung, the leading manufacturer of LCD panels, is set to expand its AMOLED screen production, driven by the growing demand for these screens in the smartphone market. According to Samsung's marketing vice president, Lee Woo-jong, the market is expected to continue expanding, with a particular focus on AMOLED screens.

Recently, Samsung unveiled a new 4.5-inch flexible AMOLED display, ideal for smartphones and some tablet computers. This new screen boasts a maximum resolution of 800x480 pixels, making it a high-quality option for device manufacturers.

The increased demand for AMOLED screens is due to the growing sales of mobile phones and tablet computers in more countries. In 2010, smartphone shipments are predicted to rise from 175 million in 2009 to 260 million. This growth in smartphone sales is expected to lead to a massive expansion of the AMOLED market.

Samsung's investment in new screen technologies this year is over 1.4 billion, a significant commitment to staying at the forefront of the industry. The company is already a key player in AMOLED production, pushing innovations such as flexible, 3D, and transparent Super AMOLED Plus displays.

However, Samsung is not alone in the new screen development market. Companies like LG, ITRI, and Toucho, which was recently acquired by Amazon, are also competing for a share of the market. Despite the competition, Samsung's investment in new manufacturing processes like lithography-based patterning hints at scaling advantages over traditional Fine Metal Mask (FMM) techniques.

By 2015, it is anticipated that 600 million AMOLED screens will be produced, a testament to the growing demand for these screens. Samsung, with its dominant position in the market, is well-positioned to meet this demand.

In summary, Samsung's AMOLED production increase by 2015 involves rapid capacity expansion backed by technological innovation, positioning it as a market leader. The overall AMOLED sector is also seeing strong growth fueled by smartphone demand and emerging applications beyond mobile.
