Safaricom Boosts Kenya's Cybersecurity with New M-PESA App and Events
Ghana has retained its position as the Chair of the African Network of Cybersecurity Champions of Africa (ANCA) for another term. Meanwhile, Safaricom PLC, Kenya's leading telecommunications company, is set to launch a new M-PESA app and has been hosting cybersecurity events to bolster enterprise resilience in the face of increasing threats.
Safaricom's Chief Corporate Security Officer, Nicholas Mulila, recently shared insights into the growing cybersecurity landscape in Kenya. In the second quarter of 2025 alone, Kenya faced a staggering 4.6 billion cyber threats, with system vulnerabilities, inadequate patching, and AI-driven attacks being the primary culprits. Mulila also highlighted the surge in ransomware, phishing, and insider attacks targeting Kenyan enterprises.
To tackle these challenges, Safaricom has been proactive. It plans to launch a new M-PESA app in November, built on Fintech 2.0, promising faster and smarter services. The company's cybersecurity experts have also shared a roadmap of upcoming services to further enhance enterprise resilience. Safaricom Business hosted a cybersecurity breakfast session for senior IT and security executives, providing an inside look at its Managed Security Operations Centre (MSOC) and its real-time threat detection and response capabilities. Attendees experienced live threat simulations and demonstrations of MSOC's analytics-driven monitoring tools.
The Cybersecurity Breakfast event, planned for October in Nairobi, is organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and aims to bring together over 450 industry leaders, regulators, and partners. Safaricom will also host the Safaricom Cybersecurity Summit 2025 in Nairobi on October 16, with the theme 'Powering Progress, Securing Growth'.
Safaricom's commitment to enhancing cybersecurity is evident in its upcoming M-PESA app, cybersecurity events, and the roadmap for enterprise resilience. As Kenya continues to face significant cyber threats, such initiatives are crucial for protecting businesses and ensuring continuity.
