Russian Woman's Gift: 60cm Walrus Tusk Seized at Berlin BER Airport
Customs officers at Berlin BER airport recently intercepted a 60 cm long walrus tusk, adorned with decorations, in the luggage of a Georgian passenger. The passenger, a 24-year-old Russian woman, was stopped after clearing the green exit for duty-free goods.
The walrus tusk, weighing nearly 2 kg, was discovered during an X-ray baggage check. It was wrapped in a bedsheet and given to the passenger by her father in Russia as a gift. The walrus (Odobenus rosmarus) is a protected species, making the tusk's possession a serious matter.
The passenger could face a hefty fine, up to 10,000 euros, provided that a purchase transaction can be ruled out. This incident highlights the strict enforcement of regulations protecting endangered species.
The seized walrus tusk serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to international wildlife protection laws. The passenger's case serves as a cautionary tale for travelers, who should be aware of the restrictions on transporting such items.
