Rostelecom emphasizes the importance of cybersecurity guidelines
Headline: The Tomsk Branch of Rostelecom Urges Residents to Follow Digital Security Rules Amidst Increasing Telephone Scams
In the ever-evolving digital landscape, the Tomsk branch of Rostelecom is urging residents to prioritise digital security, as telephone fraud schemes become increasingly sophisticated.
Roman Kuznetsov, Inspector for Special Assignments of the Information and Public Relations Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the Tomsk region, emphasises the importance of not answering unknown numbers, disclosing card details, and transferring money to unknown persons. He also advises against installing suspicious applications on mobile devices and following suspicious links.
Oxana Boldova, Director of Mass Segment Operations at the Tomsk branch of Rostelecom, echoes these sentiments, stressing the importance of digital security awareness, particularly for children and the elderly. She also highlights that digital security begins with personal awareness.
To help protect against telephone scammers, Rostelecom has provided a list of digital security rules:
- Do not share personal or financial information over the phone, especially if you did not initiate the call.
- Verify the identity of the caller by asking for official details and calling back through official contact numbers.
- Be cautious with unsolicited calls, especially those requesting urgent actions like transferring money or revealing passwords.
- Do not follow instructions sent via SMS or voice calls that ask you to click links or install software.
- Use call blocking or spam detection features available on your phone or mobile carrier’s services.
- Regularly update your phone’s software and security settings to protect against malware.
- Report suspicious calls to your telecommunication provider and appropriate authorities to help prevent scams.
Following these guidelines helps minimise the risk of falling victim to telephone fraud schemes.
Rostelecom clients can utilise the "Cybersecurity" service through the "My Rostelecom" mobile application or in the personal account on the official website of the company. For additional protection, Rostelecom has launched a free personal data leak monitoring service - "Cybersecurity".
Since July 5, 2025, penalties for aiding and abetting fraud have been increased in Russia, as mentioned by Roman Kuznetsov. If you suspect a scam, it is recommended to hang up immediately.
