Romania proposes Constanta Port as a passageway for Pakistani goods to reach Europe

Romania and Pakistan are exploring opportunities for comprehensive economic cooperation, as revealed in a recent meeting between Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan and Romanian Ambassador to Pakistan, Dan Stoenescu.

The discussions centred around several key areas, with both countries expressing interest in boosting trade and agri-trade. Romania has shown a particular interest in Pakistani agricultural products, meat exports, pharmaceuticals, surgical instruments, and consumer goods like electric fans. Pakistan, on the other hand, seeks Romanian investments and joint ventures to boost trade.

In the realm of energy, Romania has expressed readiness to support Pakistan’s transition to green energy, offering technological assistance in solar and wind power sectors. This is part of a broader energy cooperation discussion.

Recognising Pakistan's growing IT sector and skilled workforce, Romania is keen on deepening cooperation through software and digital services exchanges, collaborations in education, innovation, and facilitating technology partnerships.

Cultural and people-to-people ties were also a focus of the discussions. Both countries agreed to enhance cultural diplomacy, improve connectivity, and facilitate visa processes to strengthen bilateral relations beyond economics.

While no formal trade agreement was signed at the latest meetings, the discussions signal a strategic alignment toward comprehensive economic cooperation encompassing direct market access, agri-trade, renewable energy, and IT sector collaboration.

The Pakistani government has started reducing tariff and non-tariff barriers, offering lucrative incentives for Romanian companies to invest in Pakistan through joint ventures. Romania, in turn, has proposed using the Port of Constanța on the Black Sea as a direct gateway to European markets, allowing Pakistan to streamline exports into Europe via maritime routes and the Danube River. This arrangement aims to diversify Pakistan’s trade logistics by reducing reliance on traditional routes through the Middle East or Central Asia.

The meeting's agenda also included discussions on trade logistics, defense, energy, and culture. The Pakistani commerce minister highlighted the policy initiatives undertaken by the government to promote the IT sector. Ambassador Stoenescu acknowledged the growth of Pakistan's IT industry and commended the talent and capabilities of Pakistani professionals in this sector.

Romania's interest in deeper industrial collaboration with Pakistan was evident, with the country acknowledging Pakistan's competitive edge in several sectors. Vietnam is also keen to invest and trade with Pakistan, according to Jam Kamal Khan. The proposal was welcomed by Pakistan, which views it as a viable step toward diversifying Pakistan's export logistics.

The discussions about enhancing cooperation between Romania and Pakistan are a positive step towards fostering economic ties between the two countries. With both sides expressing a willingness to facilitate exchanges, it is hoped that these discussions will lead to concrete partnerships and mutual benefits in the near future.

  1. Romania exhibited a strong interest in collaborating with Pakistan in the IT sector, aiming to foster software and digital services exchanges, education collaborations, and technology partnerships, recognizing the growth of Pakistan's skilled workforce in this area.
  2. In the rapidly evolving world of technology and global politics, the potential for shared growth between Romania and Pakistan extends beyond economic cooperation, with both parties showing a keen interest in exploring joint ventures, particularly in the renewable energy sector, as Romania offers technological assistance in solar and wind power.
