Robotic Armament on the Horizon for Ukraine's Military Arsenal
Amidst intensifying Russian air attacks using hundreds of Shahed drones each night, Ukraine has unveiled a new air defense system, Sky Sentinel. Reminiscent of a simple gun turret, this affordable and accurate defense system requires minimal human operation.
In the face of Ukraine's known lack of air defense systems, Ukraine's air defense has struggled during recent heavy attacks, particularly due to the use of numerous Shahed drones. Military expert Colonel Reisner stated in an interview with ntv.de that Russia may further increase its production capacity, reaching up to 500 Shaheds per day.
Sky Sentinel is billed as a "Shahed catcher" by United24, the official fundraising platform of the Ukrainian government. The platform aims to raise $1.5 million to fund ten systems, with each system costing $150,000. The system is also said to be capable of eliminating significantly smaller drones and even cruise missiles, with one unit already in combat, reportedly shooting down four Shahed drones.
The AI-controlled Sky Sentinel requires only radar synchronization and placement in combat positions. It calculates when and where an attack will occur, allowing it to engage targets without human intervention. The system's range is undisclosed, but it can rotate 360 degrees and is equipped with a machine gun.
While it remains to be seen how many Sky Sentinel systems would be necessary for comprehensive protection, it seems that more than the ten systems United24 seeks to finance may be needed for effective airspace protection. In addition to the Soviet-era air defense systems Ukraine currently uses, they possess highly effective Western systems, such as the German Iris-T, the Gepard air defense tank, the Norwegian Nasams, and F-16 combat jets.
However, the availability of these systems remains insufficient. During air attacks, soldiers are often found on pickup trucks, trying to shoot down objects from the sky with simple machine guns. Others use portable air defense rockets like the Stinger type. The F-16s delivered from the West are also still limited in number, with around 40 pieces in total.
