Revolutionized ESL Electrostatic Speakers by QUAD for the New Generation X
QUAD Unveils the New Generation of ESL Speakers: ESL 2812X and ESL 2912X
After six years of development, QUAD, the renowned audio brand known for its classic heritage in the digital age, is set to launch the sixth generation of its iconic ESL (Electrostatic Loudspeaker) speakers. The new models, named ESL 2812X and ESL 2912X, will be available from mid-August 2025, with the ESL 2812X priced at $14,995 / £10,999 / €13.999 per pair and the ESL 2912X priced at $17,995 / £12,999 / €16.999 per pair.
The ESL 2812X measures 107cm high, while the ESL 2912X are 40cm taller. Despite their differences in height, both models are broader but have a slimmer side profile due to their electrostatic panels. The new ESL speakers are the result of an extensive review of the design and manufacturing processes, led by Paul McConville.
The new ESL X models have improved performance in three key areas: electrostatic panels, operational electronics, and audio transformers. The electrostatic panels have been refined in the manufacturing process, increasing their performance potential. The Mylar diaphragm, incredibly light and dynamically responsive, with very low distortion levels, particularly intermodulation distortion, forms the heart of a QUAD ESL speaker.
The new audio transformers, made in the UK, have been engineered to improve signal dynamics, particularly within the middle and high frequency ranges. The operational electronics have been split into three independent modules: high-voltage multiplier module, control and protection module, and low-voltage signal module.
The new ESL speakers are said to be the ultimate realization of electrostatic technology, capable of "sonic transparency, clarity, dexterity, and openness." They continue to employ the concentric ring electrode design to achieve more precise stereo imaging, a hallmark of the ESL series but now optimized with advanced manufacturing technologies.
The low-reflection stealth matt black finish of the new ESL X models removes traditional wood trims to modernize and update the design. The ESL 2912X has six electrostatic panels compared to the four in the ESL 2812X, contributing to its enhanced sound quality.
QUAD's ESL speakers, originally developed by Peter Walker in 1957, were the world's first full-range electrostatic speakers. They are known for their exceptionally clean sound with the ability to respond accurately to musical transients. The new ESL speakers build upon this legacy, delivering unprecedented sonic detail, dynamic range, and stereo imaging fidelity in electrostatic loudspeakers.
