Revolut Expands Operations in Portugal, Aims for Success in Initial Years
Revolut, the London-based 'superapp financial' with over 55 million clients worldwide, is set to launch its Portuguese branch this Thursday. The move marks a significant expansion for the company, which until now operated in Portugal under the free service provision regime from Lithuania.
With a current client base of 1.8 million individuals in Portugal, Revolut has ambitious plans for growth in the country. The company aims to acquire an additional 500,000 clients over the next three years, positioning itself to become the third-largest bank in Portugal by number of clients.
The Portuguese branch will offer a wide range of services, including consumer and business accounts, credit cards, loans, insurance, and a new daily interest deposit account. Access to services such as salary domiciliation and direct debits will be facilitated with the Portuguese branch and the associated Portuguese IBAN.
Revolut's expansion into Portugal includes integration with the Portuguese payment system, connecting with Multibanco and MB Way systems. Some functionalities, such as Multibanco, will only be available after the migration of existing clients to the Portuguese branch, which will be a gradual process over the next few weeks.
Deposits will continue to be protected by the Lithuanian guarantee fund, and Revolut does not disclose the volume of business and net result of the operation in Portugal, nor the investment made in Portugal. The company currently employs 1,300 people in Portugal.
Notably, Revolut has no plans to offer housing credit in Portugal at this time. The company is also not yet working with business clients in Portugal, but this may change as the Portuguese branch grows and evolves.
Revolut's financial performance has been strong, with profits of 9.34 billion euros in 2024, more than double the 3.95 billion euros in 2023. The company's expansion into Portugal is expected to accelerate the pace of client growth, as the new services and Portuguese IBAN offer greater convenience and accessibility for customers.
As Revolut continues to grow and expand, it is positioning itself as a major player in the global financial industry. With its focus on innovation, user-friendly services, and a commitment to growth, Revolut is poised to make a significant impact in the Portuguese market.
