Revving Up the Past: Peugeot 208 GTi - Iconic Hot Hatch Makes a Electric Comeback
Revived Performance Icon: Peugeot E-208 GTi Makes a Stunning Return
The beloved Peugeot 205 GTi, a favorite amongst car enthusiasts, is back from the past. But this time, it's not just dominating the roads with power; it's also leading the way with fewer emissions and a modern electric twist.
The 2019-launched Peugeot 208 model is nearing the end of its lifecycle, and before the 2027 model change, the French manufacturer is making one final statement with the comeback of a GTi version based on the electric 208.
This revival of the GTi badge dates back to the 80s and 90s when Peugeot offered the 205 series in various GTi versions, which still command respect in the hot hatch scene. The last GTi from Peugeot was available between 2013 and 2018 in the first generation of the 208.
Electric Comeback with More Power
The new Peugeot E-208 GTi stays true to the sporty attributes of its historic counterpart but with some modifications. The track width increases by 6 cm at the front and 3 cm at the rear, and the body lies 3 cm lower. Strikingly styled 18-inch lightweight alloy wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires and larger front brake discs (355 mm) emphasize its sporting aspirations. The rear showcases a black diffuser with integrated LED rear fog light, contrasting with the otherwise red-painted body.
Under the hood, the E-208 GTi utilizes the M4+ electric motor, producing between 276 hp and 280 hp, with torque rated at 345 Nm (approx. 255 lb-ft). It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds, but is electronically limited to 180 km/h. The battery is the same as the standard model, with 54 kWh. However, due to its performance, the range drops to about 350 kilometers.
GTi-typical Atmosphere Inside
The interior of the 208 GTi oozes GTi-typical atmosphere with many red accents, a flat-bottomed steering wheel with GTi logo, Alcantara upholstery, and sports seats with a combination of perforated leather and Alcantara. Despite the pronounced side bolsters, Peugeot promises everyday comfort. As of now, the official price for the E-208 GTi has not been announced, but given its positioning as a high-performance electric hot hatch and the significant upgrades over the standard E-208, it is expected to command a premium.
