Juiced-Up Legacy: Peugeot E-208 GTi Returns with a Sizzling Twist
Revamped Peugeot E-208 GTi Makes a Triumphant Return as Iconic Compact Car Reemerges
Get ready, gearheads! The Peugeot 205 GTi, a beloved hot hatch with a dedicated fanbase, is back, but with a modern, electrified twist. Before the 2027 model changeover, Peugeot is making a statement with the revival of the GTi version based on the electric 208.
The 208 series in its current generation is approaching its end, and Peugeot is giving it a rousing farewell with the release of a GTi version. The French manufacturer has a history of offering GTi variations of the 205 series spanning over a dozen years in the 80s and 90s, and the last one was available between 2013 and 2018 as part of the first generation 208.
Drool-Worthy Comeback: Peugeot's Electrified Superstar
Unlike the 205 GTi, which was strictly a three-door model, the new 208 GTi will rock as a sleek five-door. Its design takes a cue from the sporty heritage of the original model, with some tweaks to amp up the sportiness. The car will feature a wider track (increased by 6 cm at the front and 3 cm at the rear), and a lower body (by 3 cm). The 18-inch lightweight alloy wheels paired with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires and larger front brake discs (355 mm) will ensure an exhilarating driving experience. The rear end will flaunt a black diffuser with integrated LED rear fog light, adding a touch of contrast to the overall red-painted body.
Under the Hood: Breathtaking Horsepower and Torque
Technically, the E-208 GTi shares its underpinnings with the Abarth 600e Scorpionissima from the Stellantis group. It churns out an impressive 207 kW/280 PS and an eye-popping 345 Nm of torque, aided by a limited-slip differential. This beast will zip from 0 to 100 km/h in a blistering 5.7 seconds, but the top speed will be electronically capped at 180 km/h.
Inside the Cockpit: GTi Flair in Every Corner
Stepping inside the 208 GTi, you'll be greeted with a dose of GTi flair: red accents, a flat-bottomed steering wheel with the GTi logo and Alcantara trim, and sports seats with a combination of perforated leather and Alcantara. Peugeot promises everyday comfort, despite the prominent side bolsters.
The battery remains the same 54 kWh as the standard model, though the range drops to around 350 kilometers due to the performance demands. Peugeot hasn't disclosed the exact pricing for the E-208 GTi yet, but given the Abarth's current price of around €49,000, we can expect the E-208 GTi to be priced lower, with a release expected later this year.
