Research Vessel Roger Revelle Makes Its Way Back
The research vessel R/V Roger Revelle has returned to UC San Diego's Scripps Pier following a year-long refit in Portland, Ore. The Scripps Institution of Oceanography, responsible for the retrofit and maintenance of the R/V Roger Revelle, stationed at the Nimitz Marine Facility in San Diego, oversaw the extensive overhaul.
The refit work brought the ship up to date with the latest advancements in marine engineering, extending its service life by 15-20 years. Significant improvements include the installation of new diesel engines, a modernized propulsion system, and safety systems.
The new diesel engines are expected to cut the R/V Roger Revelle's emissions by up to two-thirds, making it more environmentally friendly. Additionally, a ballast water treatment system was installed to prevent invasive marine species from being discharged in ballast water.
Bruce Appelgate, Scripps Oceanography Associate Director and head of ship operations, announced that the first scientific expedition after the refit will take place in October off Southern California. The R/V Roger Revelle will undergo further preparations at the Nimitz Marine Facility in Point Loma through September. Technicians will reinstall, test, and calibrate the scientific instrumentation to ensure optimal performance during the upcoming expedition and future missions.
After its time at the Nimitz Marine Facility, the R/V Roger Revelle will operate with updated scientific instrumentation, ready to continue its vital role in oceanographic research. The return of the R/V Roger Revelle marks an exciting new chapter in its long history of service to scientific exploration and discovery.
