Renault Announces Unexpected Change at the Top
Renault, the French automaker, has appointed François Provost as its new permanent CEO, effective immediately. Provost's appointment comes as the company prepares to release its half-year financial results and faces financial and strategic challenges in the weakening automotive market and the restructuring of the Renault-Nissan alliance.
With over 20 years of experience within Renault, Provost brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the leadership role. He has held various executive positions in France and across Europe before joining Renault in 2002, and served as the CEO of Renault-Nissan Portugal from 2005 to 2008.
In more recent years, Provost has served as the company's chief procurement, partnerships, and public affairs officer. He has established major partnerships with global players such as Nissan, Geely, and Aramco, and played a key role in negotiating Renault's disentanglement from Nissan's capital ties.
Provost's strategic and operational expertise is viewed as critical for guiding Renault through its current market difficulties, accelerating EV adoption, managing trade tensions, and reshaping the company’s global positioning. His appointment aims to ensure continuity and stability amid these challenges.
Renault Chairman Jean-Dominique Senard believes Provost's attributes will ensure the continuity of the Group's development, particularly internationally. Senard stated that Provost's expertise and knowledge of the company will help complete the implementation of the strategic plan, finalize the terms of the next one, and ensure its successful execution.
Provost's background includes being Renault's director of purchasing and institutional relations and serving as the unofficial number two under former CEO Luca de Meo, who prepared him for the leadership role. He is a 57-year-old graduate of the École Polytechnique and an engineer from the elite Corps des Mines, reflecting strong technical and management skills. Notably, he spearheaded the creation of two Renault subsidiaries: Ampere, focused on electric vehicles, and Horse, dedicated to hybrid combustion engines.
Provost's appointment is for a four-year term, and it is expected to maintain the company's performance trajectory initiated by de Meo. Duncan Minto, Renault's former CFO, served as an interim CEO in the middle of July.
In addition to his role as CEO, Provost also served as Chairman and CEO of Renault Samsung Motors in Korea for five years. His strategic leadership is expected to be instrumental in finalizing the terms of the next strategic plan and ensuring its successful execution.
