SpaceTV-1 Brings Stunning 4K Earth Views from ISS
SpaceTV-1, a collection of Ultra High Definition 4k cameras, have been mounted to the Bartolomeo platform on the European Space Agency's (ESA) Columbus module, bringing a unique perspective of Earth and the International Space Station (ISS) to viewers around the world.
The SpaceTV-1 cameras were launched to the ISS in March 2024 by SpaceX's CRS-30 cargo mission, with the European Space Agency (ESA) involved in the project as the ISS module where the cameras are mounted belongs to them.
These cameras offer three distinct views, including one camera oriented to capture the long curve of Earth's horizon, another focusing directly on Earth below, showing a stretch approximately 155 miles (250 kilometers) across, and the third looking at the ISS's forward docking port, connected to the Harmony module, and any visiting spacecraft that are docked there.
The repeatedly rising and setting sun is visible from the camera on SpaceTV-1 as the ISS completes another orbit every 90 minutes, offering a breathtaking sight to those tuning in.
Sen, a London-based company, is behind this project, aiming to make the astronaut experience accessible to the public. Their live 4K video stream of Earth from space is available on their official satellite video platform website, where viewers can watch real-time 4K views from the ISS and other satellites. The live stream is also available on YouTube through Sen’s channel, streaming continuous 4K footage of Earth from the ISS.
The live video streams from space are available for free on Sen's website (Sen.com), and can also be accessed on their mobile app and YouTube channel. Users can subscribe to Sen's newsletter to receive breaking news, updates on rocket launches, and information about skywatching events.
The overview effect, a phenomenon experienced by those traveling beyond Earth's gravity well, is often described as a change in one's perception of Earth and humanity. Apollo 14 astronaut Ed Mitchell described it as an "instant global consciousness" and a "compulsion to do something about the state of the world". SpaceTV-1 and Sen's live video streams from space may just inspire such feelings in viewers, offering a glimpse of our beautiful planet from a unique perspective.
