Education Minister Embraces Digital Strategies in His Agenda - Prioritizing Digital Solutions Remains the Focus for the New Education Minister

In the German state of Saxony-Anhalt, the traditional classroom model continues to dominate education, with students attending school for four days a week. However, on the fifth day, students in the traditional classroom model can work on digital tasks from home, or participate in practical days in businesses or engage in projects.

Recently, Jan Riedel, a high school teacher for German and History, was introduced as the successor to Eva Feußner as the Education Minister of Saxony-Anhalt. Riedel acknowledges that the problem of personnel shortages will continue to occupy the state for at least another ten years, and a 100% supply of teachers will not be possible everywhere in Saxony-Anhalt, or in almost all federal states, in the coming years.

To address this challenge, Riedel's ministry is building the platform "Learning World Saxony-Anhalt" to bundle various digital offers accessible to all schools. The platform aims to better organize statewide digital substitute lessons and improve the management of digital education in the state.

While specific details about Saxony-Anhalt's digital strategies addressing teacher shortages are yet to be officially disclosed, general trends suggest that digital recruitment platforms and online job portals targeting potential teachers, virtual and blended training programs for teacher certification and professional development, the use of AI and analytics to identify critical subject shortages and forecast teacher demand, the implementation of digital classroom and teaching tools to reduce teacher workload and improve job attractiveness, and employing mentoring and networking platforms digitally to support new teachers are common strategies employed by education ministries in similar situations.

In the secondary school in Tangerhütte, lessons can continue via screen-based teaching when a subject teacher is unavailable. For instance, math lessons can be conducted on screens with a teacher from Genthin. This practice demonstrates the potential of digital solutions in addressing the teacher shortage in Saxony-Anhalt.

As Riedel and his team work to implement digital strategies to address the teacher shortage, they are expected to provide more concrete details in the near future. In the meantime, the traditional classroom model will continue to make up the largest part of education in Saxony-Anhalt.

Community policy should be developed to support vocational training as a potential solution to address the teacher shortage in Saxony-Anhalt. With technology integration, such as digital recruitment platforms and online job portals, individuals with vocational skills could be incentivized to take on teaching roles, especially in critical subject areas. Vocational training programs could also be expanded to provide teachers with the skills needed to effectively employ digital tools in the classroom, thereby improving job attractiveness and reducing teacher workload.
